MYTHS AND FACTS ABOUT THE DACHSHUND PIEBALD PATTERN |
Fact: The existence of piebalds in
early breed history is well-documented in several dachshunds books from
Germany, England and the U.S. And, the First Official AKC Dachshund Standard
(1935) included the "white" dachshund! "Two-Colored Dachshund - . . . deep
black, chocolate, gray (blue), and
white; each with tan
markings. . . ". AKC's 1935 dachshund standard was
translated directly from the German Dachshund standard. But, Piebalds were
around way before this! The Piebald Pattern is a legacy of the breeds that
went into creating the dachshund that we know and love today! The pattern
has been carried recessively ever since! |

Myth #3: There is NO WAY of being able to tell the
difference between a Double Dapple and a Piebald Dachshund. Fact: Only a very few double dapples are hard to distinguish from piebalds. Generally, there is a shading/dappling effect within the solid patches of double dapples. Plus, very few double dapples have totally dark eyes. Most double dapples have a blue eye or at least a partially blue eye. And, from what we've heard, the DCA already has well-written description of piebalds that would make judging them very easy. |

Myth #4: An all white dachshund doesn't live a
healthy, happy life with the high majority not making it past birth. Fact: There have been many piebald breeders who have proven this wrong. A few examples of this are pictured below. Puppy Pictures all the way up to Healthy Happy Adults! |

Myth #5: A Piebald Dachshund will ultimately have
health problems, specifically deafness Fact: This is an unproven health risk in piebald. Several piebald dachshund show breeders are currently getting their breeding stock BAER-tested, and no piebalds, to date, have yet to show up with any hearing problems! Not to mention the hundreds of piebald dachshunds pictures in this petition, all looking to be very healthy examples of the breed! |
Myth #6: Getting rid of the piebalds will protect
the integrity of the traditional dachshund colors. Fact: As was stated with Myth #1, the Piebald Pattern is a legacy of the breeds that went into creating the dachshund that we know and love today! Most likely, the Solid Colored Dachshunds were created since early Dachshunds too closely resembled early Basset Hounds. So Dachshund breeders chose to emphasize the solid colors to distinguish between the two breeds. So if you are trying to "Protect the integrity of the dachshund breed" then you most definitely NEED to include the Piebald Dachshund! |
Myth #7: The Dachshund Club of America made a
mistake in 1999 when it described piebalds in its "Visualization of the
Official Dachshund Standard". Fact: By stating that DCA made a "MISTAKE" by describing piebalds in the illustrated standard is an insult to the people who worked hard to publish it. Also, the DCA Board had to approve its contents before it went out to the membership, so this is implying that those board members at the time were incompetent, too. This is also a slap in the face to those breeder/judges who have awarded piebalds with RWB, RWD, and AOM at several DCA National Specialities. Those long-time breeder/judges apparently considered these piebalds worthy DACHSHUNDS, regardless of their pattern. |
Myth #8: The Piebald Dachshund is only seen and
registered in the USA. Fact: First of all, why do we in the U.S. particularly care what other countries are doing or have done? And Secondly, Piebalds can be shown in Canada and several have completed their championships. Also, the Japanese Kennel Club allows piebalds to be shown and also has several champion piebalds. There is a piebald champion in Germany and a piebald breed winner in Italy. |
